The National Old Folks of Liberia is a non-profit humanitarian organization established December 5, 2011. The Organization aim is to advocate for the needs and rights of the Old Folks of Liberia.
According to the 2011 census report conducted in Liberia, old folks constitute the total population of 170,971 inhabitants: which summed up to (48%) of the Liberian populace. The demographics also showed that 35% of the old folks reside in urban and semi urban areas. The other 13% live in the rural areas. Below are insights of the situation old folks faced prior to and after the fourteen years war in Liberia. Prior to the war, Old Folks were highly respected, honored, allowed to contribute in the decision making process of the country. Additionally, the Old Folk played a major role in the upbringing of the kids and upkeep of the family. On the other hand, after the fourteen years of senseless civil crisis, Old Folks lost their dignity. The plight of old folks in Liberia has not changed.
In urban and semi urban communities, life for the old folks is even worst. There exists a lack of family support system. As a result, most old folks survive as beggars at the mercy of pedestrians. Furthermore, Old Folks who worked over the years and were pensioned are not fully benefiting from the pension scheme and other benefits required by law. There is no concrete system put in place by Government to sustain Old Folks when they are pensioned.
Additionally, the Old Folks are faced with numerous challenges in the rural areas. Some of which include, lack of proper care, lack of health facilities, lack of safe drinking, absence of proper diet, which lead to early death. In addition, some are culturally seen as liabilities on their families.
In view of the above, NOFOL is now partnering with National & International NGO to buttress government effort. NOFOL is member of the global alliance for the right of older people (GAROP) and other alliances and Coalition of Caregivers and Advocates for the Elderly in Liberia (COCAEL).
